IB DIPLOMA PROGRAM (GRADE 11 & 12)
The IB Diploma Program is a comprehensive, rigorous program of study that students complete in the 11th and 12th grade. It is combined with the MVHS honors sequence of 9th and 10th grade courses to represent a 4-year program of studies at MVHS.
In 11th and 12th grade, IB Diploma Program students must complete one IB subject from each of six areas: English, world language, history, experimental sciences, mathematics, and an art or IB elective course. Most IB core subjects are 2-year courses; students begin these courses in 11th grade and take their end-of-year exams in May of their senior year. Many of the electives are 1-year classes that can be taken in either junior or senior year.
In addition, Diploma Program students must successfully complete three required core elements that broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills: Creativity-Activity-Service (CAS), the Extended Essay (EE), and the Theory of Knowledge (ToK) course.
Students who are successful in the IB Diploma Program earn a Virginia Advanced Studies high school diploma while simultaneously earning an IB Diploma.
The IB Diploma Program and MVHS honors preparation both emphasize international-mindedness and development of the the IB Learner Profile traits.
