If I didn’t take a world language in 8th grade, can I still take an IB world language in high school?

Yes. Students do need to complete 3 levels of a world language before beginning the IB world language course in 11th grade, but the 4×4 block schedule at MV allows students who have no previous world language classes to take 2 levels in a single year in order to meet that requirement. Students can ‘double-up’ in either 9th or 10th grade.

 

I’m zoned for a different high school. Can I just take the SCPS honors classes at my base school and then transfer to MV in 11th grade for the IB Diploma Program?

The answer here is “maybe, but it’s not ideal.” MVHS 9th & 10th grade honors course teachers work in vertical planning teams with MV IB teachers to ensure preparation and MV 9th & 10th grade students take part in helpful seminars. These are things that would be missing from your preparation if you take honors classes at another SCPS high school. It’s not impossible, it’s just not ideal.

 

If I applied to the full IB Diploma Program but checked “undecided,” do I need to attend the seminars?

You should, because these seminars will provide you with experiences and information that will help you to decide if you want to pursue the full IB Diploma Program in 11th and 12th grade or not. If you attend the seminars, your decision will be more well-informed.

 

If I was accepted to the IB Diploma Program when I applied in 8th grade, am I locked in to doing it?

No. You have 9th grade and 10th grade to work on honors classes before you commit to the full IB Diploma Program. That happens when you register for your 11th grade coursework. At the same time, being accepted in 8th grade doesn’t mean that you’re guaranteed to complete the IB Diploma Program.
