Instruction to Industry: Work-Based Learning. Inspire, Empower, Excel

A High-quality Work-based Learning experience is a school-coordinated experience within the workforce that includes sustained engagement with industry professionals in high-demand fields in which students apply coursework learning to a real-world setting while at the same time building critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creative thinking, and citizenship skills (Virginia’s 5 Cs). Students practice their technical skills and durable skills on a sustained basis, and these experiences accelerate learning toward the goal of earning a national certificate of completion, an industry recognized credential, and/or attain postsecondary credit; and receive feedback and guidance through mentoring and supervision from industry professionals.

Work-Based Learning Continuum

While the new definition of High-quality Work-based Learning (HQWBL) narrows what Virginia will consider for graduation requirements and inclusion in the 3E Readiness Framework, it does not negate the need for a broad continuum of WBL experiences for students. In Virginia, students will be provided with multiple opportunities to build awareness of careers, explore potential career options, and begin to build the technical and durable skills needed for success. These experiences should begin in elementary school and build on each other culminating in High-quality Work-based Learning experiences that support enrollment, enlistment, and employment transitions. Students should be provided experiences to learn about work, learn through work, and learn for work as they move through their secondary education and prepare for their postsecondary transition.

Curriculum Framework Alignment:

  • Learning about work: Introduce career exploration and awareness activities early, such as job shadowing and industry tours, to help students understand various professions.
  • Learning through work: Implement service learning, mentorship, and externship experiences that allow students to gain hands-on experience.
  • Learning for work: Provide HQWBL experiences as well as advanced training, industry credentialing, and specialized training opportunities.
